I'm in Berkeley, CA. I'm actually on Telegraph Ave at Caffe Mediterraneum. While it's been quite awhile since The Graduate was filmed here and even longer since Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg kicked it inside these walls, I thought maybe their gift for words would rub off on me. It should be noted that the only book I took with me on my travels is a signed copy of Ginsberg's "Howl and Other Poems" that my sister gave me for my 18th birthday.
So sitting here is kinda significant...like when I found out that Ginsberg once lived on my street in New York.
While it's definitely unique here, I'm not sure how I feel about all the hippies. It's as though time stopped at 1969 and everyone around here is just waiting for the next thing to protest...which of course, is admirable, but I guess I'd rather do other things with my time than stage sit-ins and make politically charged tye-dye t-shirts.
Perhaps my parents raised me wrong? Or maybe my father's activism just never rubbed off on me? I mean, the man did live out here for several years during the late 60's and early 70's.
Think I'll wander some more...take photos of the hippies in their natural habitat...maybe throw a bar of soap at a few...

I never understood those crazy protesters. Last time I checked, no policy was ever changed or implemented because a bunch of angry unwashed people had signs and sat on the street. How about actually WORKING to change the system - get involved! Oh, wait, that doesn't make the evening news, and might interfere with your busy schedule of tie-dying shirts....
